Change Your Methods

As I was standing near my front door the other day, I kept smacking, scratching and shaking my foot. You ever get that feeling that something is crawling on you even if its only in your head?

Luckily, this was not that type of situation. As I looked down, a small infestation of ants had gotten into my door way and they evidently thought my leg was a tree. I proceeded to deal with the ants the same way any giant would. I got my broom and pushed them all outside and out of my door way. “That's what you get for messing with the big dog”, I said to myself lol. I even sprayed ant killer just to make sure they wouldn’t return. An hour later I was shocked to find them following the same trail in my door way back to where they were. It was at this moment, I realized I needed a different plan. I later learned that ants are very unique, in the sense that they follow after scent trails that previous ants have left before them. It wasn’t until I was able to deal with the scent, that I was able to actually fix the problem.

Have you ever been in a situation like this? A situation where your trying to fix a problem, but the problem keeps returning. I know I have. It’s so frustrating! I'm trying to eat healthier but, I keep running into the same problem. I am trying to have a better marriage, be a better parent, honor God more but, I just keep running into this same problem! What if I told you, all you have to do is kill the scent. Here what I have learned:

  • My solution is better than "a" solution”: Don’t just look for something that works for others, find what works for you. Build a fresh solution based upon the core values, interests, and goals that you have. You don’t just want the habits, problems, and weaknesses you hold to die in this moment. You don’t want them to ever return.

  • “Stop dropping Crumbs”: I couldn’t just get rid of the ants, I had to make sure my kids weren’t dropping crumbs in that area any more. Your greatest leaps in life are connected to changing your “lifestyle” habits not just fixing the problem in the moment. Whats one habit you can work on daily this week that would make a world of a difference?

  • “It might Stink”: I found out that the best way to kill the scent of an ant is to use Vinegar and water. I hate the smell of Vinegar! Solutions are not always comfortable. Be willing to accept the uncomfortable to achieve your solution. In other words, make peace with being uncomfortable. The best solutions always are.
