First Birthday Photoshoot

Izzy’s First Birthday!

For the first photoshoot of the year, I had the honor of photographing this handsome little fella for his very first birthday! This is Izzy and he is an absolute joy to work with. His spirited personality and relentless curiosity are some of my favorite things about him.

For this session, mama wanted to do a simple monster themed shoot so we set up one backdrop for standard portraits and one seamless backdrop for the smash cake portion of the session. The main decor for this session included banners and balloons which is classic in my opinion because it really helps us to focus on the subject.

I didn’t have too much trouble keeping Izzy engaged because he was fascinated by the variety of balloons on the set. Though he explored a little, he never became bored or disinterested. About half way through the portrait session, we had time for a brief snack and change of outfit which really helped us to zip through to the smash cake pictures.

This shoot was especially fun for me because Izzy has such a dynamic personality. I love that I was able to focus on capturing his essence through the huge range of expressions he exhibited. When he was captivated by his surroundings, he expressed it; when he was perplexed by the texture and color of the squishy toy he was given, you could tell. My favorite expression captured was when he finally got a taste of his monster cake. With Izzy, you never have to guess! Just one look at his fact told you that there was indeed an unexpected sugar rush haha.

Once we placed the cake in front of Izzy, you could tell that he was surprised by the color and size. He didn’t seem sure if he should touch or explore the cake so mama joined in on the experience and helped him out. With green frosting circulating around his fingers and toes, Izzy articulated his approval through giggles and clapping.

The whole session was a piece of cake (no pun intended haha). Izzy had an amazing experience and I loved having him in the studio. I can’t wait to capture his future milestones and growth over these next years.
